THE MARINE HEAT WAVE (RED INDICATES WARMER THAN AVERAGE, BLUE IS COOLER) EXTENDING FROM WINTER 2013/14 THROUGH 2016 WAS A COMBINATION OF A WARMING TREND IN THE GULF OF ALASKA (“THE BLOB”) AND A STRONG EL NIÑO. BY 2017 THE UPPER 100 M OF THE WATER COLUMN WAS RETURNING TO AVERAGE TEMPERATURES, BUT DEEPER WATER REMAINED WARMER THAN USUAL.
