Over the approximately 45 year time series (based on monthly CTD samples) the decade since 2000 has generally been cooler than normal as seen below. When viewed from this longer temporal context, the period since 2005 has been cooler than normal (anomalous), although the cold anomaly in winter 2013 is not as strong as in the figure above. The other striking feature evident in the 1970 – 2012 anomaly time series is that the cold anomalies tend to be much more frequent (but not as strong) as the warm anomalies.
